My mum who is 70 has been suffering with acute pain now for the last 7 weeks. One G.P. told her she had a trapped nerve in the neck but now another one has said she is suffering with osteo arthritis in her neck and it is crumbling. A lot of her pain comes from her shoulder but most of it runs down her left arm. Can anyone shed any light on who is right and what can she take for the pain? She is at her wits end and hardly getting any rest or sleep because of the pain.

Try Advil liquid gels.
i would tell her to go back to doctors for some co-codamol tablets, they are very good for this type of pain as i have arthritus in my toe and they do help, she should not have to suffer in pain. good luck..
The 2 diagnosis are not incompatible. At 70 she will inevitably have osteoarthritis in all her joints, everyone does. She will probably also have some osteoporosis which will produce some wedging of the vertebrae. This will cause nerve trapping which may radiate pain to the shoulder.
70 year old may run into stomach problems if they take anti-inflammatory drugs unless they take stomach protectors as well. Simple pain killers can produce problems with brain function and if they contain codeine can produce constipation, confusion and addiction, particularly in the more elderly.
What I am really saying is though there should be an easy answer to your question, however there is no straight forward one as all the options have potential problems. She needs to go back and chat over the options with their various risks with her GP.
Try bromalain. It is a natural product made from pineapple and helps a lot with pain. If it were me, I would take her to a chiropractor. I have been helped by one and so have lots of folks. Some people wouldn’t go for anything , but since I have had good luck, I can recommend their type of help. It is so much better than popping RX drugs.
my mom also had suffered from enormous arthritis pain and a friend told me to visit a very helpful site that helped us get relief from pain. for more useful help check out this site http://www.reliefmd.com
Cherry juice concentrate. I used to work in the produce department in a grocery store. people came in all the time looking for it. They swore by it. some bottles even say on it that it is good for arthritis. it might help with the pain
I have arth. bad in my whole spine, so too well know the feelings. Have been doctoring for it 5 yrs. now. She HAS to get relief from it. She can try over the counter meds., but they aren’t going to help for long. She really needs a Dr. who is going to take care of her properly. I can’t believe that Dr. let her leave w/o dispensing anything for her for her pain…IF she can, I’d advise she go to a pain management Dr. They are the ones who are going to care for her PROPERLY. That’s who I had to end up with anyway. He is the only one who has done me any good whatsoever. Have been taking pain meds. for 5 yrs. now, just had a procedure done on my spine last Monday & I have NO pain whatsoever! I am finally pain free for the first time in 5 yrs. These Drs. know what they are doing as that’s all they do on a regular basis. They are specialists. That’s what I’d really advise rather than have her bounce around from Dr. to Dr. & find no rellef as they are NOT specialists in pain management.
She should see her G.P. again. Depending on any oher medication she may take, her could prescribe something like Dihydracodeine, Co-Codamol, or Diclofenac.
hope she gets on OK
I am sorry to hear your gran is in so much pain. My nanner used to have me rub deep heat on her back and neck, I think the smell was so strong it jammed the pain receptors in her brain. Did you know Rose hip syrup has just been found out to have something in it that makes it good for Arthiritis sufferes. I think that cammomile tea can be given as a very mild sedative to help relax tense rigid muscles that contract in pain.
