I have neck pain and upper back and shoulder pain, a few different people recommended I go see an Osteopath. So I went yesterday – however what was an uncomfortable aching is now a sever, very very painful, can’t move properly pain.
Is this right? I expected miracle cures (silly of me I know) but at no point did I think that the day after I’d have such pain in my neck particularly.
I really don’t want to go again, it is quite expensive and at the moment I feel like it ha made things worse. But if it is normal to be sore the first time, then I guess I shouldn’t be worried.
Went To See Osteopath – Should I Be In Pain?

I think this is pretty normal especially as it was your first time. It gets better the following times, you return to ‘normal’ a lot quicker, sometimes without any pain at all.
I normally feel like this after seeing an osteopath. They say the pain/aching you feel afterwards depends on how much out of place your bits were when you went in and how much manipulating it needed, the areas around may be bruised and also there is the pain of it being in a different position now (although this is the ‘correct’ position, your body was not used to it as it must have been out of place).
You need to take anti-inflammatory tablet such as nurofen/ibuprofen to lessen the swelling and give it time to settle into place.
Can you raise your arms as normal? if not, go to a Rhuematologist. Signs of Myositis are not being able to raise arms, aches in the back of the neck and shoulders, Legs aches follow. If arms okay you may just need a good Chiropractor.
It is normal to feel sore after treatment i feel very sore after i go and i have been going for 7 years for back treatment i never get clicked cos I’m scared but it still feels sore. I Wouldn’t worry but maybe next time ask why did you feel so sore and ask if there is anything else that could help.
One would expect to feel a little better…I wouldn’t go again.
Sometimes aches can be worse for a short while after seeing the osteo, physio or chyro but you shouldn’t be in severe pain.
If you cant move properly after seeing the osteo that concerns be a bit too.
if the pain is unbearable/sever go to your doctor.
get your doc to send you to a pysio and they will give you a series of exercises you do at home and i guarantee it will do the trick for you and cost you NIL
Much pain is from muscles below is an example of what may help (based on headaches).
Begin with a couple swigs of molasses or a couple of bananas daily – magnesium (which regulates many things in the body) and potassium (a needed building block for muscles).
Drink at least 1/2 gallons of water per day. Running a body low on water is like running a car low on oil is the analogy the head of neurology at UCDavis told my husband about 10 years ago.
Now to the cause – muscles – your back, neck shoulders and head have tender spots. They are knots in the fibers of the muscles called trigger points. It makes the muscles tight which makes them press on nerves and other things causing the pain.
The cure – start with a professional massage, you will also want to go back over any place you can get to 6-12 times per session up to 6 times per day rubbing (or lightly scratching on your head) every where that is tender until the knots go away. The place where the skull connects to the spine press up under the edge of the skull (to get to those muscles).
For more information read The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Davies. It teaches what to do and where the pain comes from.
