Upper Shoulder/neck Back Pains From Sitting In Front Of Computer?

December 16th, 2009 · 7 Comments · Pain

I have a upper neck/shoulder sciatica everytime I sit in front of a computer for over 1 hour. It mostly formed due to the nature of my job being a graphic designer. What is the best remedy for this problem? I have used pain killers, muscle relaxers, inflammatories. These are temporary fixes. I would like a real solution to this stinging pain without having to quit my job. Thanks.

Try these tips to prevent those aches and pain on ur body when sitting in front of a computer.
I also suggest not getting a thumb track. ur thumb will get very very sore and tired.
If you don’t want to move ur right arm a lot. then don’t. This is what i do, Ileave my arm in a resting position while my fingers move the mouse, not my hand. I grip the mouse with my tips of my fingers. I also change the speed of the mouse to super fast so I don’t have to move my fingers a lot. Once you get used to the sensitivity of that, it will look as though your not moving ur hand. Less movement, less pain

I have the same problem but after taking all the stuff you did I read about the posture side of it. It could well be your chair is not correctly aligned for you. I changed my chair for a high back with neck support and placed a small cushion in the small of my back to take the strain off the neck. Surprisingly enough it worked for me. I also raised the chair to different heights and found a more suitable one. I had it too low down which forced my head to tilt upwards putting that strain on the neck and left shoulder. Try it and see if it helps you. Good luck.

Medication will likely not help. You need to make ergonomic changes – how you are sitting, the placement of the computer and monitor, what you do with your feet…
Make sure your computer monitor is an arms length away from you. Make a fist, hold it straight out at arms length, and it should just hit the screen. Make sure the monitor is slightly lower than your head, so your gaze is a bit downward. Neck and shoulder pain is likely due to the keyboard placement and mouse. Make sure the keyboard is the same height as your elbows and you are not tipping your hands upward to type. I would suggest a thumb trackball mouse, so you eliminate the arm movements. Once I did this, all my neck pain went away. See link below for example.
    Hope this helps!!

Not sure…you can always get up and stretch when you get pains.Stretch the parts that hurt and walk around the room for a minute or two.

I would suggest a chiropractor or accupuncture. They both helped me. Chiropractors…… you need to keep going to. I got accupuncture and haven’t had the problem since, but it has to be a good accupuncturist.
