Upper Abdomen Pain For 5 Days, Now Slight Pain In Right Shoulder Blade?

November 1st, 2009 · 3 Comments · Pain

I have a dull, but persistant pain in my upper abdomen, it has been there for 5 days now and I can’t lift anything, slouch, or really do anything that involves using my core without hurting this area. It is also very sensitive to touch. The first few days I had terrible indigestion and gas, but now those symtpoms are gone because the walk-in clinic doctor prescribed Zantac and Nexium, but I believe they are just treating symptoms and not the cause. On Friday (Day 4), the pain was so bad that I had to go to the ER, but they just ran some blood tests and X-Rays and told me it wasnt my heart or spleen and that I should see a gastroenterologist. I made an appointment but its not for 3 more days and it seems that this just keeps getting worse. Now today (day 6) I am starting to have a slight pain in my right shoulder blade. Any idea what this could be, and whether or not I need to see a doctor immediately or if I will be ok for a few more days??

This sounds like cholecystitis. When the gall blaccer becomes inflamed pain can radiate to your shoulder. This may subside spontaneously in 7-10 days. Generally however if your abdomen is tender, you are spiking a temp and especially if your blood count is high and your xrays(whatever kind you had) show an abnormal gall bladder your doctor will admit you into the hospital, start antibiotics and consider surgical treatment. If your pain is progressively worse and especially if your are febrile go back and get rechecked. Even if this is a false alarm you need to be careful.

I AGREE 100% WITH DIRTY MOORE…classic symptoms of cholecystitis. Not only get treated, but if you are really interested in improving you’re overall health of the gallbladder, intestines, kidneys, and liver….try a detox system that works for 10 up to 30 days. It will get rid of crud thats in your body plus replenish the good bacteria. My mother had similiar symptoms. I really feel like the practitioners should have caught this one. But it gets really busy for them.
    Good luck!

It could be many things, but doubtful andy life threatening. Without knowing your medical history, I can only give some general ideas. You could have a hernia, an ulcer, or something as simple as you are not use to exercising and if you starting doing so a little too fast, may have hurt yourself. Have you suddenly started with push ups, weights, or anything that uses both abdomen and arms and shoulders? A heart attack would be on the left arm so as they said no worries there. I agree that many doctors treat sympoms before they even know what something is. If the Zantac is not working nor the nexium after a week, you should stop taking it. They do have side effects, some serious. To see if it may be food related try this. Eat small portions instead of large, watch high carb and fatty and salty foods. Keep them whole grain wheat breads, pastas, yes they have a real good whole grain pasta, fruits, veggies, etc. Stay away from processed foods or high sodium and fat foods for now. Just before and shortly after you eat, low level exercise, just a few minutes of stretching and fast walking, even in the house. Do not eat dinner as the main meal, but lunch. Eat light dinner, and have snacks at least 2 hours before bed. Make sure you exercise after the last meal, but not later than 3 hours before bed. It will take a little adjusting, but not as much as it sounds. Drink NO sodas at all, and only decaf tea and or coffee and none later than 3 hours before bed. LOTS of water. If this helps over next couple of days, then you know it is probably gastric. If not, then it is probably not gastric. Also, if you are very overweight, loose it. That is a major cause of gastric problems and other health issues. God Bless and good luck!
