Sharp Pain In Left Side Of Neck/shoulder When Breathing?

November 21st, 2009 · 9 Comments · Pain

In the beginning of the month, I started getting sharp pains in my chest out of nowhere. I went to the ER and they just gave me pain killers. Ever since then, I’ve had a little chest pain if I breathe in deeply. Recently, however, I had the sharp pain return, but this time the pain started ‘pulsating’ in my back as well. I went to the ER and they didnt do anything again, mentioned enlarged lymph nodes (maybe). Anyhow, now I have pain in the left side of my shoulder/neck that gets worse when I breathe hard (which happens anytime I lay down and change positions). I have difficulty laying down due to pain, laughing hurts and sneezing does too. My temperature sometimes rises a little to like 100. My blood pressure is EXTREMELY high despite taking pills for it…I’m 18 and my blood pressure has read as high as 188/130…Anyhow, I want to know how I can temporarily help the pain be lessened til my lab work comes back.

You might have a collapsed lung, even if you have not received any trauma to the chest. When I had a collapsed lung, I had pain in my chest if I hopped up and down or bent over more than 45 degrees or so.
Although this is fairly rare, it is more common if you are tall and thin. A chest x-ray should determine if you have a collapsed lung or not.

You need to see a Dr. – not an ER – The emergency room is for relief of immediate symptoms (like a heart attack or car accident) – You need to see a Dr. that can follow your case – and I’m going to suggest that you see a Gastroenterologist. I think your pain/discomfort may be due to an esophageal problem. If it is not – the Dr. will refer you to another specialist. (do you have more pain when you are either full after eating — or stomach is empty?) – If so , I suspect a hiatal hernia problem. Your blood pressure may be from anxiety as well. Call tomorrow and get checked out -

This has happened to me too, but not as bad. Don’t worry. It is perfectly normal, but you should still go to the doctor, NOT the ER. I think the doctor’s would be much better. Hope this helped! :)
