Whatever you do, keep it moving. Otherwise you could get “frozen shoulder” (adhesive capsulitis) and takes a really long time to heal, sometimes 2-3 years. So get on pain killers that will allow you to give it full range of motion, and stretch it out.
See your dr, he may say you need X-rays or MRI, or perhaps a chiropractor who does accupressure may help. I don’t think it’s fibromyalgia, as that would include pain all over. Hope it’s better soon.

Sounds like you could be suffering from a chronic form of bursitis. (The bursa are located in the joints of the shoulder & are surrounded by a sack that is filled with fluid.) Massaging will not help if that is the case; movement will actually aggravate the condition. Try minimizing movement while pain is severe, starting a regime of anti-inflammatory ANSAID like Motrin (take after eating something) 400mg-600mg two to three times a day & speak to your doctor. If you chose not to go to the doctor, this condition can take a long time to heal (like 3 months or more). So be conscious to avoid extending motions & do not sleep with your arm up under your head or on your side (again putting pressure on the shoulder).
