Pain In Shoulder And Upper Back Area. Any Idea’s On What It Is?

October 15th, 2009 · 3 Comments · Pain

I laid in bed for 30 minutes trying to get to sleep.. Right as I started to doze my right chest/shoulder area started hurting really bad. It went all the way through to my back. I’ve read a lot about pain in the lower back but I’m also 37 weeks pregnant so.. Back pain comes with that anyway. I just have never felt pain in my upper shoulder/back area like that. Also, it fades away when I sit up. When I lay back down though.. It starts to come back.. Does anyone have any idea’s on what my problem is? I would LOVE to be able to get to sleep. It’s 3:40 in the morning. :0)

Hmm, sounds a lot like gas. We give a combo of apple juice and ginger ale, slightly warmed, to relieve gas pain in the postpartum unit I work on. If you have those two things try that. If not, try some tums and sleep with some pillows behind your back to relieve the pressure. Good luck!
—Heartburn isn’t the same as gas pains. Heartburn will mostly stay centered and not travel, but gas will go into your shoulders when you lay down at times. Ask anyone who has ever had a c-section… or any surgery for that matter… about gas pains in their chest and shoulders. It’s killer. The best thing to do is stay elevated slightly. If it continues to bother you call your doctor… that is what you pay him/her the big bucks for . :0) (And there is always someone on call for people with questions.)

1.Your bed is too soft.Try sleeping on the floor or rug.
2.Either you are lifting too heavy things around.
3.This is real important, are you wearing high heels. If so stop wearing it instead wear flat shoes,is very bad for your pregnancy.Get some soft back massage with olive oil from someone who is an expert.
    Addition:Eat plain yogurt every morning.

It sounds to me that you just have to stretch out your spine. You probably had a slight injury that’s causing sciatica now. Inversion therapy sounds like it could be perfect for you. Inversion therapy is when you hang upside down with gravity boots or on an inversion table and the weight of your body pulls your spine or elongates it so that your spine can straighten out and go back into alignment and straighten up. This will also fix your posture problem. Once you begin to invert your spine will get used to being straight and will stay that way after a while. If you invert you can also do mini crunches to strengthen your spine and to build the muscles in your back. Inversion therapy is the best thing for you sweetie. Give it a try, you won’t be sorry. Here is where you can get some good info.
