My Mom Thinks She Tore Her Roter Cup In Her Shoulder What Can She Do For Pain?

November 13th, 2009 · 5 Comments · Pain

She seriously feels like going to the emergency her pain is so bad and she definitely knows how to handle pain– she’s had 5 kids without an epidural. The doctor can fit her in first thing tomorrow because he is giving a serious surgery today so she needs something to ease the pain until then. Her doctor said to try and take 8 ibuprofen ever 4 hours and it didn’t phase her. Please help!

Her doctor is right. I think you mean rotator cuff. I had a complete tear in both my right shoulder and later on, my left shoulder. Surgery is usually the only cure. The healing takes at least four to six weeks and will require physical therapy to help gain back strength in her muscles.
Until her surgery, nothing much will help unless the doctor is willing to give her a pain pill with codeine or hydrocodone. However, she will get that after surgery so please do not worry. It is hard to deal with this kind of pain. I wish her success with her surgery. She will need you to help around the house until her shoulder has healed.

she should call an orthopedists office- they will usually get a patient in asap. dont bother with a primary care doctor unless you need a referral for insurance reasons.
the orthopedist will xray it, give medications, and probably order an MRI which is the only way to determine if it is torn.
then they will decide if they need to do surgery or not.
she may get a cortisone shot or a round of prednisone as well as some pain medication at the ortho office.
    good luck

try a sling to get pressure off the shoulder,,,,,,,,,unfortunately if pills are not helping there isnt to much that can,,,,,,,,If she is in real bad pain,,,,,,,,then go to emergency room and see follow up with doctor the next day………

Try icing it…it may be uncomfortable but if may help because the next best thing next to advil for this condition would be prescription pain meds. If too unbearable there is always the ER.

    Her roter cup?
Wow, she is lucky that she didn’t tear her rotator cuff.
Tell her to follow the doctor’s advice or find another doctor.
