I used to sleep on a friends couch (for a year) but recently got my own place and went back to sleeping in a bed. Every morning i wake up with sciatica, its not just lower sciatica either – middle back and sometimes shoulders too.
Its not a new mattress.
I am overweight (but have started taking regular exercise), however have not hurt my back/shoulders recently at all.
I never have this pain when I sleep on the couch
thanks
I Wake Up Every Morning With Back Pain, What Is The Best/quickest Way To Prevent This.?

Hello,
Good question!
Pain is a warning sign that something is wrong and needs to be addressed.
Generally, the causes of pain come in 3 forms: Physical, Nutritional and Emotional – and finding total sciatica relief generally requires assistance from all 3 categories (fortunately, you can do most of them yourself and at home).
Some things you may want to consider is your sleeping posture. Though you may be sleeping on a quality mattress, if you’re sleeping on your stomach or laying in an improper side lying position – gravity is pushing your back out of alignment. When this happens, this points stress and pressure on your spine, muscles and ligaments causing additional pain and discomfort.
Simply correcting your sleeping posture may have a positive change in your sleep. For example, sleeping on your back can help or sleeping on your side with a pillow between your knees.
Also, from a nutritional standpoint, you mentioned that you were overweight. That said, there is a better than likely chance that you may not be eating in such a way that supports your body’s natural ability to heal and regenerate new cells. This, alone, can be a major contribution to your sciatica and a precursor to additional health side effects … it’s worth considering. (AND, the good news is that you can lose weight, feel less pain, have more energy and be healthier without having to diet!).
Hope this helps!
All the best,
Charlie

it could be that you’re used to sleeping on the couch (a year??) and your muscles are being used differently, or it could be the exercise. probably a combination of the two.
i would probably invest in a new mattress, you do spend more time on it than anywhere else, and it makes an incredible difference. i got a really good one from work on the cheap a few months ago and when i lay on the old one in the spare room, i can’t believe i used to sleep on it.
Sounds like the mattress is not the right level of firmness for you. Exercise will help you to strengthen your back as well as lose weight and decrease the stress on your joints/spine/body.
You should try putting plywood between the mattress and the box spring to firm up the bed. To relieve your aches in the meantime, take ibuprofen or use actipatch.
Congratulations on getting your own place again!
My friend got into a car accident some months ago and messed up her L5 in her back. She couldnt lay down or really lean against her right side. She was taking some pretty heavy pain pills which made her really sick. Now… she wakes up pain free.
all the info is on my site.

Maybe your pillow is too high. Definitely don’t sleep on two pillows. As a matter of fact, try sleeping without the pillow one night, and take it from there.
Also say your prayers before you go to sleep.
You probably need a new bed. It could be too soft for your weight. And since its recently, your body just may have to get used to a bed again, and find its comfort zone while you sleep.
I say the mattress is the problem, or even certain activities during the day could cause it. Try getting an ‘egg-shell’ covering for your bed, this should help, if not then try changing your daily reutine.
First is maybe its the way you sleep and also the mattress could be crappy and then how many pillows do you use. try sleeping in different positions.
you’re use to the couch. I’ve been there. I used an electric heat pad for a while. It helps take out the ache
This is a sign of deeper problems. Sounds like yo have a sick vertebra. See a Chiropractor!
