November 21st, 2009 · 8 Comments · Pain

I woke up this morning with severe pain in my right shoulder/back area. I am thinking I may have pulled a muscle. I have been taking aleve and using heating pad. Nothing has worked. I am a little scared because, when I breath deeply I have pain in my chest as well. What do you think this is and What do u rhink I should do?

I’m not a doc, but it could be any # of things: pleurisy, pulled muscle… Check out http://www.webmd.com & click on the pic of the body to specifically diagnose ur particular area. U really should see a doc!

You’re experiencing chest wall pain. So we have that out of the way. Chest wall pain is when you strain the muscles between your ribs. This generally happens when you try to pull something or lift something awkward or heavy. Considering your shoulder problem, I’d say that you tried to move something tall and heavy yesterday. If you didn’t, then it is possible that you strained your muscles between your ribs another way.
    Chest wall pain
One of the most common varieties of harmless chest pain is chest wall pain. One kind of chest wall pain is costochondritis. It consists of pain and tenderness in and around the cartilage that connects your ribs to your breastbone (sternum).
Often, placing pressure over a few points along the margin of the sternum results in considerable tenderness limited to those small areas. If the pressure of a finger duplicates your chest pain, you probably can conclude that a serious cause of chest pain, such as a heart attack, isn’t responsible.
Other causes of chest wall pain include:
    * Strained muscles from overuse or excessive coughing
    * Muscle bruising from minor traumahttp://www.mayoclinic.com/health/first-a…
Trauma: Probably the most common cause of chest wall pain is trauma. Usually, pain is the aftermath of a remembered injury during a fall, fight, or accident. Occasionally, chest wall pain seems to be spontaneous, but in these instances is probably related to an unrecognized strain or tear of an intercostal muscle or rib fracture during exercise, a bout of coughing, or a forgotten injury.http://www.nlhep.org/books/pul_Pre/chest…
Relieving chest wall pain takes time. Avoid any strenuous activities, use cold compresses if you feel you need one and take a non-steroidal anit-inflammatory medication (NSAID). Ibuprofen (Advil, etc) is a better choice for relieving the pain.
Your shoulder will benefit from cold compresses as well. The Ibuprofen will help your shoulder.
Like any muscle pain, it will take time to go away. If you are still in major pain after 48 hours of cold therapy, see a doctor or chiropractor. If the pain is being relieved by the methods I’ve mentioned, there will be no need to see a doctor unless you just want to play it safe.

You should see a doctor as soon as possible.
You don’t say your age so its difficult to help here but I’ll give you some pointers, my advice is see the doctor though!
It may be a pulled muscle if you remember doing something that may be the clue. Muscle and tendon “pulls” or tears take a very long to settle and to become painfree. You may need to get help from your doctor and he may even decide to strap your shoulder.
There are other problems such as pleurisy or cosackie virus. This would give you pain every time you breathe in and out deeply. A doctor needs to diagnose this and put you on treatment. X-rays may be needed.
Lastly, if its only chest pain with shortness of breath you really do need to see a doctor soon and have the problem diagnosed.
