How Bad Does A Tattoo On Your Shoulder Blade Hurt?

November 14th, 2009 · 11 Comments · Pain

I’m thinking about getting a tattoo on my right shoulder blade. I’m pretty pain tolerant, but i hate needles. Just how BAD does a tattoo hurt?

don’t be scared! unless you just have a really low tolerance for pain, then it’s really not that bad. I was 16 when I got mine and it wasn’t near as bad as everyone said it would be. When they get near the bones it kinda feels like sandpaper grinding on them, but it’s more aggravating than painful. I didn’t cry a single tear throughout the whole thing and mine is pretty good sized. Oh, and after a few minutes you mostly go numb from the needle, so you don’t feel a lot anyway. Hope this helps..and don’t worry, it isn’t near as scary as people make it out to be. Just be sure that you pick something you will want to look at for the rest of your life. I wish I had taken lots more time picking mine out..lol.. Good Luck! =)

i have a tattoo on my shoulder blade. idk how big your getting it because how long it takes is going to affect the pain level. the first half hour i was fine, second i was really tired, third i was fine again and by the ending of the second hour i was in pain and had to hold someones hand and i’m pretty pain tolerant as well. it kind of feels like a radiating burning sensation but its definitely tolerable. everyone always expects it to hurt like a mother and then surprised at how little it actually hurts. best of luck! oh and that lady is right about the location problems, make sure you realize that it can be very noticeable.

I cant imagine it would hurt that bad. Meatier parts of your body will hurt less than softer or bony parts. So you might feel some discomfort as they go over your shoulder blade. I got one done on my lower back and it hurt like something wicked. There was another guy at the shop who had a ton of tattoos who also said his lower back one hurt the worst. I’d honestly pick upper back over lower back if your concerned about pain not to mention if you are needle phobic getting it done on your back doesnt allow you to see anything and makes it easier to handle. I’m someone who goes ballistic when getting a shot or blood drawn but by not being able to see the gun it eased up those fears.

i hate needles too but it’s not that big of a deal because the tattoo will be on your back so you won’t be able to see it being done. personally mine didn’t hurt very much at all, it was more irritating then painful lol. it just felt like a bit of a burning sensation while it was being done, then for the next couple of days it felt like a sunburn. enjoy your ink :)

It obviously varies from person to person but….I had my right shoulder blade done maybe six months ago, its big and it only really hurts around the bottom of the shoulder blade where the bone kinda sticks out. It stings there, but for me all i could feel the majority of the time was the vibration from the tattooing gun its self and no pain. You will be fine if u love it GET IT!!!
Its your body and nobody else can decide what is best for u but you!!!

The ones that are being done on bone are the most painful which in your case will be too!. Just try not to rub it or carry anything on your shoulder for a few weeks so it can heal without any further discomforts.
Don’t listen to other people who tell you not to get it too! it’s your own body and I’m sure you will make the right decision. Go for it!! Good luck.

it all depends on the person. my first one hurt like you wouldn’t want to believe. but i got another one on the other side and didn’t hurt at all and when i got my first one touched up i nearlly feel on the floor laughing. so that tells you some thing.

the closer it gets to the edge of your blade(the part that sticks out when you move your arms behind u) and the closer to your side it gets, the more it hurts.

feels like someone’s rubbing sandpaper on you for a week.

PLEASE don’t get a tattoo on your shoulder blade. I got one years ago and I didn’t think about the future when I may want to wear a spagetti strap shirt or sleeveless dress at work (or at your wedding) and now I’m having to spend lots of money to get it lasered off. If you want to get a tattoo, get it somewhere where you can cover it up whenever you need to.
