Karen, that is extremely nice of you to be thinking of your mom this way! Here are two movements that should stop the problem and if she can remember that posture is so important to her. These movements may not seem related to the problem but have her do them and she will be pleasantly surprised. Have her sit in a straight chair and raise the left arm up as high as it will go and then return it to the side. Now raise the right arm and while doing these raises note which arm goes up higher. Start with the arm that went up the highest. Raise that arm up as high as it will go for thirty seconds and then rest it for fifteen seconds. Repeat that movement twice more with that arm exactly as it was done on the first repetition. After doing those movements on that arm now do the opposite arm three times exactly the same way. Next have her turn the head to the left as far as it will go but not into any pain that might be there and then go to the right as far as it will go but not into any pain. One side will have gone further than the other so start on that side and turn in that direction as far as she can for thirty seconds and then rest for fifteen seconds. Repeat that twice more and then go to the opposite side and repeat the movement three times on that side exactly the same way. Have her do this at least twice a day and the problem should go away.
Shoulder hunches is a good exercise for shoulder and neck pain. neck pain due to lifestyle reasons can be cured completely plus if your mom continues doing a few neck strengthening exercises regularly, she’ll never have trouble with her neck again.

Alternating ice and heat will help, but first she must relax the muscle. Have her drop her head and pull it in toward her chest and slowly roll her shoulders (together or separately) forward and backwards. I also like to pull one arm in front of my chest hooking the elbow of my other arm at my elbow and pull – my arm crosses in front of my chest, then switch sides – after all this do the ice/heat thing.
put an ice pack on the pain for fifteen minutes then something warm for fifteen minutes, do that for an hour and repeat in the next day or so.
