Can You Cough So Hard You Have Back Pain And A Sore Chest?

November 7th, 2009 · 24 Comments · Pain

I have had a cold/bad cough since Tuesday of this week. I have coughed alot and it is not as bad as it was, but I have got a pain in my back and shoulder and when I cough it gets worse sometimes. Have I just strained everything from coughing?

Oh Yes! It’s Happened to Me. A Couple of Years ago, I not only had the Back Pain from Coughing So Much, I also started Coughing Up Blood.

the sore chest and coufing might be some type of respritory problem (in the lungs)
and the sciatica could be a cold or flu
if not then yes you have probably just strained

  • :P

Absolutely. A cough that severe could be whooping cough (you can get this even if you’ve had the immunization), bronchitis or pneumonia. You might need antibiotics and should see your doctor if it doesn’t improve soon.

OMG!Th esame thing happened to me except not in my chest it was in my upper back just below my shoulder blades.I went to my doctor he said it was “growing pains” and ” it runs in my family” and that I should only sleep on my sides….Do you possibly have a sunken in lower back like me?My pains happened from sneezing….

  • DDR QUEEN

wow that must be a powerful cough, oh wait the big bad wolf called he wants his lungs back.

  • Wii-tard

YES! I have had this happen to me also. I never went to the doctors for it, but it eventually went away.

no,i think u might have fever n diabetic, check with ur DR asap.take care.

  • Maria

Probably. That’s happened to me as I usually get a bad upper respiratory illness at least once a year. If that doesn’t clear up soon you should see your doctor about getting an antibiotic. It can go on for months.

    Possibly

you have the capacity to cough so hard your lungs burst and heart stops so ………..yep

  • Calix

It’s definitely happened to me. I’m such an anxious person that I thought something was seriously wrong, but I noticed after I stopped coughing that the pain eventually subsided.

Yes, you have. Those are strained muscles you feel
Not only that but we can actually crack ribs from coughing too hard.

  • kris

It’s quite possible to pull a muscle coughing. In fact, it’s even possible for an otherwise healthy person to crack a rib from coughing! I know because I did it just a few years ago (I’m in my thirties, so it’s not like I’m old and frail or anything). If your cough is that bad, though, you should probably go to the doctor to have him/her listen to your lungs and make sure it’s just a cold and not bronchitis (that’s what I had when I cracked my rib).

  • Dogzilla

That happens to me sometimes, too.

it sure sounds like it! sometimes with a cold I cough so much my head hurts with each cough.. my dad just got over the Hundred Day Cough that was going around this winter and he had a lot of soreness in his chest, etc from all the coughing (not to mention stomach aches from the all the cough drops that didn’t work! HA!) Poor you… I hope you feel better soon!

I gave myself whiplash from coughing badly last year, so yes, you could have strained something.

PLEASE try these 3 remedies…EVERY time I feel run-down or get that tickly feeling in my throat I take these 3 things and it NEVER turns into a full-blown cold.
    1) Olive Leaf Extract by “Herb Pharm”….it’s in liquid form, and has no side effects…it immediately goes to work to kill any viruses in you…and it’s all natural.
    2) “JarrowDophilus”, by “Jarrow Formulas”…it will keep the healthy “flora” in your body in perfect balance which keeps your immune system strong.
    3) “Emergen-C” Vitamin C packets by “Alacer”
All three can be purchased at “Whole Foods Market”, possibly “Trader Joe’s”, or call your local health food store to inquire about these 3 products.
EVERY friend and family member who has taken this advice, hardly ever gets sick.
For your throat: “Peaceful Mountain–Throat Rescue”
You will NEVER find a more powerful throat spray which is all-natural….soothing, fast acting, and kills bad bacteria on contact.
Cayenne Pepper in capsules (or sprinkled on soup) helps greatly with congestion AND is also an immune systen booster too….and drink lots of organic green tea to help your energy levels.
You’ll see!! :) Get well soon!

I know what you are going through because at the moment I am the same.I started with a sore throat last week on Wednesday and it has turned to a bad cough which will not go away. My back and chest also hurts loads especially when at night the cough will not stop. It’s probably of the coughing that our shoulder and back hurts nothing to worry about. Hopefully it will get better.

  • kristina

oh yes…definately. one time when my mom got a bad chest cold, she broke a rib coughing so hard!! once your cold gets better the pain will go away..hope u feel better soon

  • luckygir

Yes, it is possible. If I were you, I would go see a doctor right away. You need to have blood work and xrays done. You could have early stages of pnemonia or viral menegitis. Either way, I would go see a doctor and get that taken care of. I really do hope that you feel better.

Probabley. I have had bronchitis since Friday of last week. And it used to hurt when I coughed. You probably have sore muscles from all of the coughing.

  • Byderule Permaculture

very easily it can also give you a bad headache every time you cough,as well as pain in the stomach, chest and neck muscles
