Can A Deep Pressure Back Massage Cause Chest Pain?

December 23rd, 2009 · 2 Comments · Pain

I received a full body massage on Friday. During the massage I asked that the area around my shoulder blades be massaged deeply, as I have a lot of tension there. The massage was VERY deep there – the therapist used her elbow. It hurt a lot, but felt good at the same time. Monday I began having pains in my chest – sharp pains from time to time and one side of my chest is sore to the touch (kind of like a bruised feeling.) Could this pain be caused from the massage?

It could be, maybe from a muscle that tensed up during the massage. This is why I don’t do deep tissue. I would definitely see a physician, and next time you have a massage, don’t focus so much on deep pressure. A good therapist will be able to alleviate muscle tension and pain without using intense pressure!

Yes, this pain could have been caused by the massage (an example only).
I would recommend seeing your doctor for further evaluation of the situation to see what they say.
