The first thing you can do is get a small plastic ziploc bag, fill it with ice for an icepack, and put it on there for at least a 20 minute interval. You may be out of shape, you may just be tired, but if you damaged anything you will need to get that pain and inflammation under control immediately. If it swells, it will just get worse.
They taught us in sports medicine, that you want to treat that as soon as possible. The more it swells, the worse off you will be. If it doesn’t clear up after the icepack or in a couple of days, you will need to rest it and let it heal. Next time, be sure and put an icepack on that immediately and it should clear up in a few days. Don’t use heat at this time. It can feel nice and soothing, but in the first 24 to 48 hourse it can make the inflammation and swelling worse.
Do the icepack 2 or 3 times and see how you feel. Then go out and buy once of those icy-hot ointments that they sell. It should have menthol and a cool sensation to soothe down the pain without making it worse.
I hope this helps you.

I like the heat patches (from like Icy Hot). I used them when I first had knee pain.
